Finding Motivation When Asking 'What’s your WHY?' Fails to Resonate
When it comes to making the decision to live a healthier lifestyle, many people tell you to find your "big WHY." This question can feel overwhelming or confusing. You might think, "What's my why? Well, because I want to feel better and look better." While these are valid reasons, they are vague and may not keep you motivated throughout your journey and the challenges you might face along the way.
I recently listened to a podcast that discussed different ways to find your "why," and I really liked their approach. Instead of asking, "What's your why?" they suggested using a more practical question: "What is something that you can no longer accept?"
In your daily or weekly life, what frustrates or dissappoints you that you no longer want to tolerate? For example:- When you need to put something heavy into your shopping cart and then take it out again to pay, do you require assistance?- Can you easily say yes when your kids want to go outside and play ball?- Can you put your carry-on luggage in the overhead bin or lift your heavy suitcase off the baggage claim on your own?- Are you eager to take your dog for a walk, or does joint pain hold you back?
Someone mentioned their "why" for working out was so they could say YES whenever their kid wants a piggyback ride up the stairs. That’s such a great reason!
Your "why" doesn't have to be complicated or involve a big future plan. Focus on the here and now, the things you can accept, and the things you can no longer accept. Write them down. Share them with a friend. Find someone to hold you accountable. Set goals and work towards becoming the person you want to be. Every decision you make will bring you closer to or further from that future you.
